Dell Accidentally sells 19 inch Monitors for £9 ($15)!!!

advertisement

The typo was online for a good eight hours shifting 140,000 monitors to 26,000 buyers. Well you can never have too many monitors around the bedroom.

If Dell fails to honor these sales, it will be in violation of Taiwan's fair trade laws and the government will seek legal recourse.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

So far, Dell has gone as far as to apologise for the mistake and will ‘compensate buyers’. Though what this means in practice is still a little vague.

All in all, we’ll be pretty impressed if buyers end up with a brand new 19-inch for the price of lunch.

Well Dell is big it would surprise me if they don't honor the sales mistake, I bet they got something new to back up the loss on this, I feel for who ever made the typo .

Dell won't have any other choice than to honor the sales.

What about the one who made that typo!?! He should have fired by now.

140,000 monitors to 26,000 buyers. They will probable honor 1 per buyer, limiting the loss to 26,000 monitors.

Yikes...at $135 loss per monitor (retail) that would be $3,510,000. I wonder what manufacturing cost is. Electronics are cheap to make.

Real loss is probably under $1 mil. in my above scenario...they can afford it.

Hope they could honor one monitor per buyer, at 135 for 140,000 will be around 20 million (retail).

Means, a typo cost them a fortune. I other words can say a zero cost them… Who said, zero has no value!!

It has and it is, 20m!!

A similar mistake at Dell, which offered a $250 instant rebate on a $349 netbook, got me two $99 netbooks last fall!

I wasn't really even looking to buy one, I was just checking them out. But I couldn't pass up that deal. Within minutes of making the purchase, the $250 rebate had been corrected to $25, in line with the rebates offered on the other netbooks.

I kept waiting to be contacted by Dell and told to cough up $500, but it never happened.

Why this is happening with Dell continuously? I’m feeling something fishy. Are the competitors able to hack into site, or somebody is hired (by competitors) working with Dell?

OR is this a publicity stunt? There won’t be this much sale as they told!

It does seem a little odd that it would happen more than once. Granted, I never heard anything about others coming across the $250 rebate, though I find it incredibly difficult to believe that I was the only person who got that lucky. (Of course, I did spend $200 I hadn't been planning to spend...hmmm...).

You'd think it would be an automated process, rather than relying on the possibility of human error.

140,000 monitors for 26,000 customers means, 5/6 monitors per head on average. There may be one who bought 10 or even 25!! You may find one and get it for 50!!

Of course some heads will roll..!!
